LEWES, DELAWARE
The History of Lewes, Delaware
Lewes, Delaware, is one of the oldest towns in the United States, established in 1631 by Dutch settlers. Originally named Zwaanendael, the town was primarily a trading post and experienced its first European settlement efforts. However, it faced challenges, including conflicts with Native Americans and subsequent abandonment.
In 1638, the Swedes took control, renaming the settlement Lewes in honor of a town in Sussex, England. The English later gained control in the 1660s, and Lewes became part of the territory governed by the Duke of York, ultimately becoming a part of the Delaware Colony.
Throughout the 18th century, Lewes flourished as a shipbuilding and commercial center, thanks to its strategic location near the Delaware Bay. The town played a significant role during the American Revolution, serving as a supply depot for the Continental Army.
The 19th century saw growth in population and infrastructure, including the establishment of the railroad in the 1860s, which connected Lewes to other regions and enhanced trade. The fishing and shipping industries continued to thrive.
In the 20th century, Lewes began to transition into a popular tourist destination, driven by its beaches and historical attractions. Preservation efforts have maintained the town's historic charm, with many buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries still standing.
Today, Lewes is recognized for its rich history, vibrant community, and picturesque coastal setting, making it a desirable place for both residents and visitors.
