WHAT IS THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS (ASLA)?

Established in 1899, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) is the premier trade association for Landscape Architects throughout the United States.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT AND A LANDSCAPE DESIGNER?

According to the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), the primary difference between Landscape Architects and Landscape Designers comes down to level of education, licensing, and scope of work. As opposed to Landscape Designers, Landscape Architects are required to have a graduate or undergraduate degree in Landscape Architecture and hold an active license in the jurisdiction in which they practice. Further, Landscape Designers are unable to work on projects that require construction, grading, or specific technical knowledge like stormwater management or native planting management that could have significant environmental impact.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO FIND A REPUTABLE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT OR LANDSCAPE DESIGNER?

The best way to find a reputable Landscape Architect or Landscape Designer is to ask friends who have recently purchased new homes for recommendations. Once you have a list of Landscape Architects and Landscape Designers, conduct interviews with each candidate and ask to review examples of their completed work. Finally, ensure your Landscape Architect is licensed with the state in which your project is located.

DO LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS HAVE TO BE LICENSED?

Yes. All Landscape Architects and Landscape Designers must be licensed with the state in which they operate.

WHAT ARE COMMON SERVICES PROVIDED BY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS AND LANDSCAPE DESIGNERS?

Landscape Architects provide a variety of services, including but not limited to: hardscape design, garden design, site design and master planning, irrigation and water management, outdoor lighting and kitchen design, pool and spa design and seasonal maintenance. It is not uncommon for Landscape Architects to subcontract Landscape Designers to implement their designs.
